IT Consulting Fundamentals
Professionals are deemed to be (often) qualified experts
in certain specific fields. Such resources, by virtue of their
command over a subject, function as advisors. Their responsibility
lies with their clients and they work according to a framed
set of principles. Do people really think of IT consultants
as professionals too? IT consultants are a part of a small
group that are highly specialised in a body of knowledge that
is understood only by the select few who have some expertise
in the area.
IT consultants, just like other professionals, spend a major
chunk of their work time with their clients. They explain
the complexities of the subject to clients and also advise
them on effective usage of the same. However, leaving apart
the public opinion, even a majority of these consultants dont
think of themselves as professionals.
A consultant needs to be a master not only on the technical
aspects of the subject but also the professionalism that is
to be followed while advising a client. There are several
other factors that have to be taken into consideration while
being a consultant. Good and poor advisors may be equally
skilled in their subject matter. However, it is their ability
in imparting customised and personalised advice that makes
a client understand the solution. It is then that the client
likes the experience of being advised, and thus a smooth ground
for a successful relationship forms.
To be efficient advisors, professionals must adapt unique
methods of dealing with clients. They should discuss the problem(s),
customarily evaluate and logically derive the solution, and
finally, communicate effectively with the client. For an IT
consultant who is skilled in this process, advising just comes
very easily and it would not be thought of as a detached practice.
However, at the same process, a less skilled person may miss
out on grasping fundamental particulars, or the client may
not properly understand the advice.
