IT Consulting Fundamentals - II
Here are a few guiding ideologies that can be practically
implemented while advising and will help in expanding the
practice of IT consulting and also the client(s)-consultant
network.
Focus on the relationship: Understanding the kind of environment
and the surroundings that the client lives and works in is
the most crucial and important factor in succeeding at advising
the client. It should always be remembered that the client
knows best about his company/organisation. Getting to know
the client on a little personal level would always help as
the consultant would be able to gauge what the client would
like better, how he would respond and how to present him with
problems or solutions.
A successful consultant also adopts a customised approach
towards the client: Few clients may be very specific about
their requirements and others may be satisfied as long as
the requirements are met without any hassles. Clients who
are experienced in dealing with consultants may be ready for
being involved in the process instantaneously. The clients
who are inexperienced in dealing with consultants have to
be educated about the whole process and also should be assured
continuously. The capability to keep numerous, and frequently
contradictory, success criteria in mind is one of the hallmarks
of the professional consultant.
Clearly define your role: The client should be made aware
of the consultants role in advising him and about the
commitment thats supposed be between the consultant
and the client. The consultant should also express his expectation
of the client to perform the required tasks and the understanding
that is required to make the relationship successful. These
are a few things that remain key factors in IT consulting.
The client may misunderstand that the consultant would be
available for him at any time during any emergency. There
may be a possibility that the client might have wanted this
in the agreement while hiring the consultant. So, the terms
and conditions should be made clear to the client and also
the consultant before working on an assignment. The consultant
also needs to specify beforehand the clients need for
availability during any part of the assignment. The consultant
may be very clear about his role in executing the assignment,
but the client might be new to consulting. So, the client
needs to be made aware of the level of availability, access
and disclosure while negotiating the contract.
