IT Consulting Fundamentals - IV

A few consultants may complain that the client is too arrogant to comply with their idea and also say that the solution to the problem would be very simple if the client followed their idea. This kind of attitude on the consultant’s part would be disparaging, as the client would be the best person to choose the most apt solution from the available solutions. A professional consultant should be able to see above and beyond his emotional attachment to a particular idea and should act in the best interests of the client and his needs.

Be oriented towards results: A consultant has to understand that consulting is not just advising the clients but also assisting them in achieving their goals and end results. The consultant should assist the client in implementing ideas and solutions thus avoiding getting diverted from the main course of action. The consultant should also prepare the client to deal with the problems and issues directly, thus keeping the client’s concentration focused towards the issue in question.

In some cases, the consultant is hired just to give advice for an issue or for research. There might be no way in which he would know whether his services are utilised effectively or just dumped in some trashcan. However, in most of the cases, the client not only seeks advice but also assistance from the consultant in obtaining the required results. In such a case, the consultant needs to carefully analyse the problem and then offer advice rather than jump to conclusions instantaneously. Being resulted-oriented does not mean applying ideas and reaching solutions through trial and error, but analysing, evaluating and then applying ideas that would give the desired results. For this, an IT consultant has to have an open mind and should watch out for newer and better ideas. A consultant has to design train, support and maintain his solutions from the beginning. By doing so, he would effectively put to use the time of interaction with the client and also churn out quality solutions in a customised manner. This helps in creating an environment that is tuned for success for both, the consultant and also the client.

These ideologies provide the IT consultants an excellent base for the building lasting advisory relationships with their clients in a manner that fosters trust and mutual respect, and that nullifies the chances of misunderstandings and unrealistic expectations.
