.sucks
An Alternative Internet Domain System
The ICAAN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)
recently selected seven Top Level Domains (TLDs), ones that
are successful in their own right. The numerous X.sucks.com
web sites also happen to symbolise freedom of speech. .Sucks
is a typical American expression that means, the ability to
criticise freely. So why not create a whole TLD that deals
with just criticism? Trademark laws would find extended applications
here albeit the fact that companies could still get at you
for libel or commercial damages.
While freedom of speech is still a hotly debated topic, exposure
could just about be the best way to handle things. How could
you possibly abide by laws of a hundred different each time
you post to the web? Wouldn't it be much more practical to
go to .sucks to register your protest? If the proposal becomes
a reality there is a chance that it would in effect become
a receiving end for any kind of criticism. On the positive
side, everyone would go to .sucks to view criticisms as well
as respond to it.
